KIRKLAND PARISH COUNCIL

NEWSLETTER

Winter 2009 Issue 13

Chairperson’s Report

It’s the thirteenth issue of our Parish Council Newsletter and Gillian Benson, our very efficient Parish Clerk asked me to write only a short piece for it, as there was so much useful information to cram in it! The newsletter has doubled in size since its inception back in 2007. We do hope that you find the information of use and we always welcome any feedback from you as to what we are doing well and that which we could do better…

Anyway, read on and find out what is going on in your Parish and the services that are available to you, whatever your age.

With best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

Kind regards

Catherine Towers

Chairman

Sunflower Competition

The original take-up of 'grow your own sunflower' was at the start very poor however, the delivery of a start-up plant appears to have been a huge success, with multitudes springing up throughout the village.

Since late August we have been measuring sunflowers in Churchtown, as many were planted at different times during the year, especially where slugs got to the plants before they could look after themselves.

The tallest plants were:

1. 3.39m (11ft 1.5in) ......... 16, Ainspool Lane (Mr & Mrs D Brown)

2. 3.28m (10ft 9in) ............ 14, The Green

3. 3.21m (10ft 6.5in) ......... Briars, The Green

A special mention must be made to the children of Kirkland and Catterall St Helen's Church of England Primary School who have grown a fabulous display of bright cheery flowers. I wonder how many people noticed that the flowers always follow sunrise from east to west each day & how many more know how they 'unwind' during the night to start the process all over again!

I hope the residents & children of Churchtown will join me in creating an even more stunning display of sunflowers in the village next year - let’s get really noticed  :-)

Footpath on the A6

Lancashire County Council is in the process of clearing the footpath along the A6 between Churchtown Garage and the boundary with Garstang. The encroaching grass is removed and the tarmac edges

will be repaired.

Village Survey

The Parish Council wishes to thank residents for completing the Village Survey about Youth Issues in the last Newsletter. There was overwhelming support of working with Catterall Parish Council to form a Youth Group and matters are in hand to start a youth club in the New Year.

Other matters raised included transport to Garstang for those older residents in Churchtown and the following information was supplied by Age Concern:

Helping older people get from A to B

The Wyre and Fylde Older Peoples Partnership Board undertook a survey in the summer of 2008 about what issues were important to older people. The need for good transport, particularly in rural Fylde and Wyre, was identified as a key issue. The community transport service provided by Lancashire County Council is helping to bridge the gap in provision, especially in rural Wyre.

Community Cars

A team of volunteer drivers provide this service using their own cars. You can travel within 20-mile radius of your home. If you use a wheel chair and can transfer to a car seat, your folded chair may also be able to be carried within the car — please ask at time of booking.

To find out whether you are eligible, contact the use the services please contact your local County Cars Co-Coordinator on 01524 388499, Monday to Friday, 10am to 3pm.

Where possible you should provide at least four days notice to access the service. Call the number above if you would like to become a volunteer driver.

Free travel is available with a Now! Card

Carols in the Village

The Churchtown Society will be singing carols in the Church Square on 11th December from 6.30pm and would like to invite everyone to join them. During the proceedings there will be a visit from Father Christmas with greetings for all the children, no matter what age they claim to be.

Kirkland Parish Council

There are three tiers of local government with areas of responsibility in Kirkland –
Lancashire County Council,
Wyre Borough Council and
Kirkland Parish Council.

Five local residents serve as Councillors on Kirkland Parish Council. They are all volunteers and receive no pay for the work they do on behalf of the Parish. Besides attending the bi-monthly meetings and those of the Councils Committees, many of the Parish Councillors represent the Council on outside bodies as the voice of Kirkland. Many devote much of their spare time to matters that affect the residents’, they are never ‘off duty’ and encourage residents to talk to them about the issues which impact on their lives. Elections to serve as a Parish Councillor are held every four years.
